Solar rebates by state: common questions

The federal rebates are the same in every state: the STC rebate on solar and the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate on storage. The headline stacked totals look highest in New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Queensland because of their STC zone and, in some states, a top-up scheme. But the state with the best payback is not always the one with the biggest number. South Australia has closed its scheme yet pays back fastest, because its high power prices make the solar you use yourself worth more.

Some do, many have closed. Victoria still runs the Solar Homes rebate ($1,400 off solar), the ACT lends up to $15,000 interest-light for batteries, New South Wales adds a battery incentive under the PDRS plus a VPP bonus, and Western Australia has a capped battery rebate. Queensland (2024), South Australia (2022) and Tasmania (September 2025) have all closed their schemes, so those states are federal-only. The federal STC and Cheaper Home Batteries rebates apply everywhere.

For a solar and battery install the maximum stacked rebate runs from about $4,400 in Tasmania to about $5,500 in New South Wales, combining the federal STC rebate, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate, and any state scheme still open. Solar-only installs receive a smaller amount. The exact figure depends on your system size, postcode, install date and the current STC certificate price, so the 30-second check returns your real number.

Yes. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate stepped down on 1 May 2026 and now drops every six months, with the next cut on 1 January 2027. Waiting does not get you a better deal, it gets you a smaller rebate. That is why the amount you can claim is the highest it will be today.
